Introduction
“Congratulations, you’ve delivered a fine healthy boy.”
The nurse handed the little boy wrapped in a warm soft blanket to Candy and she welcomed her son into her arms. She stared at him and thought he was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The nurse smiled and said, “We need to start teaching him how to eat.”
Candice shook her head, “Give us a moment. I want to hold him for just a few more moments first.” The nurse smiled a knowing smile and stepped back. She looked around and said, “Should we call for the father to come in and join you?”
Candice stared at her baby and shook her head, “There is no father.”
The nurse felt awful, “I’m so sorry…I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
Candice was pretty much ignoring her as she nodded absently and focused on her son staring at her with the bluest eyes she had ever seen. There was no father, he came from a dream. But no one would believe her, so she kept it to herself. She held him close and kissed him on the top of his head. She wondered what he was going to become. She guessed every new mother had the same question…only she had a real reason to ask; her son was different but there was no reason to continue to try and tell the doubters; doing that had almost gotten her placed in an asylum. She learned quickly that no one would believe her; her father had proven that with little doubt. He signed over her trust to her, told her to leave, and never come back.
Candice sighed. She would have taken ownership of the trust in another two years, anyway. Her father was a professional politician, just like his father before him, and having an unmarried daughter expecting a child was just not acceptable…it could tarnish his image. He had tried to force laws through Congress in the past punishing families that had unwedded mothers. He exploded when she had to tell him she was pregnant.
Candice expected her mother to come to her defense but that proved fruitless; she was addicted to being the power behind the throne and she wanted her out faster than her father. Both refused to believe that she never had a physical relationship with anyone. Her father quietly had her name legally changed on the trust and sent her to Europe to have the child.
Three weeks after she left, her father staged a mock funeral for her telling the press she had died from an accidental prescription drug overdose. The only one’s present at her funeral were her father and mother. The sympathy for his loss made the difference in his re-election.
Candice sighed, it wasn’t like her father and mother would miss her. They had pretty much ignored her most of her life and only used her as an election prop or a photoshoot item for display. Her grandfather was furious at her treatment and had created a trust in her name before he died with a huge percentage of his estate. Boy! That set off fireworks but her father didn’t need the wealth; he had already amassed a huge fortune doing so called work for the people. One thing was certain; she would never want for anything…and neither would her baby.
She held her son tenderly and whispered, “You will have all the love I never had. Love larger, deeper, and stronger than anyone ever felt before.”
The nurse walked up and wondered why the baby wasn’t crying; it had to be hungry, “Ma’am, its time.”
Candice smiled at the nurse, “Thank you for waiting. We had some issues to discuss.”
The nurse smiled, wondering what in the world this woman was talking about, as she lifted Candice’s gown. “Have you decided on a name?”
Candice looked down at her Son and smiled, “His name is Jimmy.”
“Is that what you want to appear on the birth certificate?”
Candice looked at the nurse and shook her head, “James Ayet Carpenter.” The nurse frowned and Candice said, “You spell the middle name, A-y-e-t!”
“Is that a family name, Ma’am?” the nurse asked as she filled in the blanks on the document.
Candice stared at Jimmy taking his first meal and said softly, “I think so.” The nurse didn’t know what to think about that. This young woman was…different…way different!
Candice held Jimmy and closed her eyes as she remembered the dream almost ten months earlier. She knew she was sleeping when…someone…was in her room with her. The dream was powerful and felt so real. She remembered hearing, “Ayet, you shouldn’t do this!” Then she faded into unconsciousness and found out two months later that she was expecting.
She thought about it and opened her eyes to stare at her baby. Yes, whoever it was, they should have done it. She was holding the reason in her arms and he freed her from the tyranny of a family that had no love. She vowed that her family would not be like the one she was bor
n into.
Chapter One
Candice, for all her supposed shortcomings, was really quite intelligent. She was ignored as a child so she spent her time with tutors and servants that broadened her mind. She found that she had an affinity for different languages and, by the age of thirteen, could speak German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese fluently. She would take trips with her tutors to other countries and learned to speak the languages just like the locals. The tutors loved the trips, Candice was so easy to travel with. Her parents were also happy to have her out of the house and not have to answer her incessant questions. Trips that took her away for months were not even noticed by her family. Truth be told, her parents spent months away in Washington and didn’t even know where she was. They paid others to watch over her.
It was her father’s closely fought re-election that brought her home for an extended stay; that was when the dream happened. After she was sent away, her father celebrated his re-election and her death is what made the difference. He was sorry he didn’t have another child to use in the future. He discussed it with his wife and, after her response to the suggestion, he never brought it up again.
Jimmy grew up speaking different languages and assumed everyone could do it. He learned at age five that was not the case. But he was happy. He and his mother would move from country to country and live in very modest accommodations. She could have afforded a more lavish lifestyle but felt that she needed to stay under the radar of anyone that might be curious about who they were and where they came from. The appearance of a poor American living in modest surroundings never caused them problems. She was extremely careful in how she handled her wealth. Heinrik, at the Swiss Bank, made sure everything stayed absolutely confidential. Transferring her Trust to the bank made him a star and he was not going to do anything to upset that gravy-train.

Candy and Jimmy were sitting on a bench next to a traffic circle in Rome one day and Candice was talking about the history of the Roman Empire. She pointed out the various buildings and monuments surrounding them and Jimmy was fascinated. Candice saw that Jimmy was getting taller. He was still slight of build but he was fast on his feet. His eyes were still as blue as the day he was born but his hair had grown out to be a sandy-brown. He was curious about everything but she never wearied of answering his questions. He was just so smart!”
Suddenly, his eyes closed and he jumped off the bench and ran toward the street corner to their left as fast as he could run. He was yelling, “Fermasi! Fermasi!”
Candice looked to her left and saw a woman with a baby stroller about to step off the curb as Jimmy arrived and pulled her forcefully back to the sidewalk, where she fell. An instant later, a taxi came out of nowhere and ran through the place the woman would have been standing. She jumped up and started running toward them and heard the woman thanking Jimmy in German. Jimmy smiled as Candice ran up and pulled him into her arms. The woman looked at Candice and said in a shaky voice, “Vilene Dank!”
Candice smiled and nodded as she took Jimmy back to the bench. He looked at her and said, “Why didn’t she stop? I was yelling for her to stop!”
Candice smiled “She doesn’t speak Italian, Jimmy.” Jimmy’s eyes widened as he tilted his head and Candice nodded toward the woman, who was now crossing the street safely, “Not everyone speaks as many languages as we do.”
“Why not, Mother?”
“They have not had the time to learn them.” Candice paused and said, “How did you see that taxi coming?” Jimmy looked toward the intersection and shook his head. “Jimmy, you had to see it to do what you did.”
“I felt something and closed my eyes…I saw it hitting them.”
“What?”
“I had a dream of it hitting them,” Jimmy replied.
Candice looked back at the corner and saw a large van blocked the view from where the taxi appeared out of nowhere. She looked at Jimmy and he said, “When was that statue made?”
Candice shook her head and decided that he must have seen it. There was no other way to explain what happened. She looked at the statue and smiled, “That was done by Michael Angelo more than six-hundred years ago.”
“REALLY?”
“Oh, yes. We’re going to see some of his artwork later today.”
“Let’s go now!”
Candice laughed, took his hand and headed toward the bus stop.
That night, Candice put Jimmy to bed and went to her room and thought about what happened. There was just no way for Jimmy to see that taxi coming. He started yelling before it could have possibly been close enough to see over that tall van. She tried to come up with a way it could have happened and finally decided that Jimmy must have heard it. She closed her eyes and had trouble falling asleep.

She began noticing from time-to-time that Jimmy would close his eyes for a moment when they were out. She knew that she would close her eyes whenever she tried to visualize something in her mind and assumed that Jimmy must have inherited the same trait. That belief changed one night in Germany when Jimmy was seven years old. They had rented a small apartment just outside the Tegel airport outside Berlin and had eventually become accustomed to large jets passing overhead.
She was awoken one night by Jimmy pulling on her arm and yelling for her to get up, “What’s going on!”
“MOM, GET DRESSED NOW! GET DRESSED!”
Candice pulled on a robe and slippers and Jimmy pulled on her arm. “JIMMY!”
“COME ON MOM, WE DON’T HAVE MUCH LONGER!!”
Candice saw terror in Jimmy’s eyes as he released her arm and ran out of the door to the apartment. “Jimmy, wait!”
“COME ON!”
Candice saw him run down the flight of stairs to the front door of the building and go outside. She ran after him as fast as she could and found him waiting for her outside the entrance. He grabbed her hand and pulled her with all his strength toward the end of the street. She stopped him and said, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Jimmy released her hand and ran as fast as his legs would carry him. “JIMMY, STOP!”
She was forced to run after him and as they arrived at the end of the street, she heard a huge blast over her shoulder that caused her to stumble forward and felt heat on her back. She continued chasing Jimmy until he stopped two blocks away. She reached him and lifted him into her arms. She turned around and saw their apartment building and the two buildings next to it burning in huge flames that lept high into the nighttime sky. Her eyes were wide open as she watched the flames begin spreading into the surrounding buildings.
She looked at Jimmy shaking in fear of what had just happened and said, “How did you know?”
“I had a dream.”
“What kind of dream?”
“I saw two airplanes crash into each other and fall on our home.”
Candice looked back at the scene from hell behind them and carried Jimmy away. She wondered how she was going to survive without her credit cards and cash she kept in a small purse. It had been destroyed with the apartment. Jimmy reached under his shirt, took out the purse, and handed it to her. She stared at him in fear, what was happening! She turned and fled into the night.
She stopped a taxi and ordered the driver to take them to a hotel in downtown Berlin. She handed the driver a hundred-euro note and he said, “Right away, Madam,” in perfect English. Candice had spoken in English without thinking. She watched the hundreds of first responders racing in the opposite direction toward the airport and could only shake her head. Jimmy had his head on her chest and she could feel his heart beating madly. She pulled him close and whispered, “Everything’s alright. Everything’s alright.”
Jimmy held on to her tightly with his eyes closed. They were dropped off at the Berlin Marriot Hotel and the desk clerk looked at them with his eyes raised. Candice was still wearing her robe and slippers and not carrying any luggage. He was leery of giving them a room. “I’m sorry, but we are at capacity.”
C
andice took out two five-hundred Euro notes and put them on the counter, “Would this possibly open a room for the night?”
The Clerk’s head went back and he smiled sweetly, “Just a moment and let me look again.” A moment later he looked up from his monitor and smiled, “I do have a room. Will this be just for the night?”
“I’ll come back in the morning and pay for additional days. We’ve just managed to escape from the disaster in Tegel and I’ll need to purchase some things to wear and order some new ID cards.”
The Clerk stared at her and said, “Perhaps I may order some items to be delivered to your room. Size six?”
Candice was surprised at his remark and said, “Five.”
“I’ll have them delivered in the morning when you awaken.”
“Thank you.”
The Clerk motioned a bellman over and handed the key to Candice, “I’m sorry for your terrible experience, Juken will show you to your room. You can finish registering in the morning.”
Candice forced herself to smile, “Thank you for your assistance.” The Clerk smiled and turned on the television on the wall behind him. He was shocked at the images on the channel with the words on the screen saying, ‘Tragedy at Tegel!’ He looked at Candice walking away with Jimmy in her arms and shook his head. They were the lucky ones.

They arrived at their room and Candice gave the bellman a tip and went to the bed. She put Jimmy down and stroked his hair, “We’re safe, Jimmy.”
Jimmy said softly, “I know.” Candice paused and saw Jimmy was fully dressed. She looked into his eyes and Jimmy said, “I had time to get dressed but I couldn’t wake you up. I kept yelling and pulling but you wouldn’t wake up!”
Candice took him in her arms, “I had a little too much wine with supper.” She paused and said, “How did you know what was going to happen?”
